What to wear to a Paris fashion show

The unwritten dress code

Paris Fashion Week has no printed dress code, but the rooms read your outfit before they read your invitation. The goal is to look like you belong in the building: clean silhouettes, one strong piece, and shoes you can wear from a 9am showroom appointment to an 8pm show.

Morning appointments: showroom and atelier

Showrooms are brightly lit, carpeted and often involve stairs, low sofas and standing around racks. Tailored trousers or a midi skirt with a simple knit or shirt works well. Avoid anything that wrinkles on contact and anything too casual: trainers, logo T-shirts and ripped denim read as underdressed even when the staff are friendly.

Afternoon and evening shows

Once you move to a show venue, the crowd becomes more directional. A single statement piece—a sculptural coat, a great bag, a bold earring—is enough. Black is always acceptable; head-to-toe black with one colour or texture is better. Heels are common but not required; many guests wear polished flats or boots because the day involves a lot of walking.

Seasonal notes

February shows are cold and often wet outside, so a great coat is non-negotiable. September shows can still be warm, so layers help. In both seasons, venues are overheated, so plan to remove a layer and still look composed.

The one rule that matters

Never upstage the show. Fashion week crowds love personal style, but the designer and the work are the reason everyone is in the room. Dress with personality, then stop one accessory short of costume.
